How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Hair grows from hair follicles, small structures that hold the root of the hair. Laser hair removal targets these follicles in order to make them stop producing hair. The wavelengths of laser energy produced by the Gentlemax Pro™ do not affect the skin, but when they contact pigment molecules, they cause them to heat up.

Because the root of the hair contains pigment that gives it color, the laser causes the hair root to heat up. This not only causes the hair to stop growing, but it also deactivates the hair follicle so it cannot grow hair anymore.

While the laser deactivates any follicles that have hair growing in them, only some follicles will have actively growing hair during each treatment. Other follicles will remain in their resting phase when they do not grow any hair. With no hair root to target, these follicles will not absorb the laser energy. People require a series of treatments to make sure all follicles come into their active phase and become deactivated by the laser.

Laser Hair Removal Preparation

Unlike many procedures, you will need to make some adjustments prior to your treatment session if you want to achieve good results.

First, you will need to stop any kind of waxing, plucking, or epilating. These all remove the hair root, which means the laser has nothing to treat. You can still shave since this leaves the root in place. You should shave before treatment, so you do not have too much hair above the skin.

Second, you should not bleach your hair any time in the weeks before treatment. Bleaching takes the pigment out of the hair root, making it harder for the laser to target these follicles and giving you less effective results.

Third, you should avoid the sun before your treatment. Tanning makes your skin darker in comparison to your hair, making the laser less effective, and sun exposure makes your skin more sensitive.

What is Laser Hair Removal Like?

Many people compare the sensation of a laser treatment pulse to being snapped with a rubber band. The Gentlemax Pro™ laser also emits cooling pulses that help decrease the feeling of heat on the skin.
