What Does Laser Tattoo Removal Feel Like?
- January 13, 2022
You may have heard stories about the pain involved in laser tattoo removal. People describe it as worse than getting the tattoo in the first place. Fortunately, none of this is true. Laser tattoo removal with newer technology works with more comfort and safety than ever before.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
We use the PicoWay® laser for tattoo removal. This laser emits energy pulses lasting only picoseconds (trillionths of a second), protecting your skin from heat damage. The energy pulses contact the ink particles, causing them to absorb the energy and break up into smaller pieces. The body can remove these smaller pieces to filter them away over time. With each session, more ink particles break down with laser treatment.
What Does Laser Tattoo Removal Feel Like?
While some people had uncomfortable experiences with old laser systems, laser tattoo removal has become a more comfortable experience. Numbing cream can be used to make you even more comfortable. At worst, you may feel some heat and stinging. While each person’s pain tolerance varies, most people find the treatment tolerable.
How Much is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Costs for laser tattoo removal depend on the size of the tattoo and how many sessions you require to remove it. Some people only want to fade their tattoo in order to get a coverup so that they will require fewer sessions. Laser tattoo removal can cost between $200 and $800 per session. Some tattoos may require only a few sessions, while others may require six to eight sessions. Costs for any procedure will vary depending on where you live, your provider’s pricing, and the number of treatments.
What Results Will I See With Laser Tattoo Removal?
You will start to see results within a few weeks of your first session. You will see some fading as the body clears away shattered tattoo pigments. After each session, more pigment will break down. Your tattoo will fade, with darker colors often the first to go. While older lasers struggled with colors like yellow and green, the PicoWay® laser can effectively remove these colors.
Most people will need at least a few sessions to see their desired results. We recommend waiting for a minimum of eight weeks between sessions to let your skin heal and give your body time to remove the already-treated particles. PicoWay® gold standard technology causes minimal damage to the skin so that you can recover more quickly between sessions.
Older tattoos will fade faster than newer ones because tattoo ink starts to break down on its own over many years. This causes old tattoos to fade and become more blurry. More ink will take more time to remove, including tattoos with more intense colors and solid areas. We will evaluate your tattoo during your consultation and give you an estimate of how many removal sessions it might take.

What are the Benefits of Laser Tattoo Removal?
Each person has a different reason for wanting to get rid of a tattoo. Some benefits of the procedure may include:
- No more reminders of a past event or relationship
- Erasing a mistake made during a time of poor judgment
- Creating a canvas for new and better tattoos
- No more unprofessional-looking tattoos at job interviews
- Removing a tattoo that no longer expresses who you are
Even if you feel embarrassed by your tattoo, remember that our job is not to judge. Your tattoo is your business, and removing it is ours.
Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?
If you have an unwanted tattoo and feel prepared to make a commitment to getting rid of it, you may make a good candidate for laser tattoo removal. You should have realistic expectations about the procedure since not all tattoos will completely disappear, and treatment can take many months to complete. Laser tattoo removal should work for you if you feel prepared for this.
Is There Any Downtime With Laser Tattoo Removal?
You will have an ointment, and a bandage applied after treatment. Many people experience some redness and minor soreness after a session, and some may notice a few blisters. Continue applying ointment as instructed. You will also need to protect your skin by avoiding sun exposure since UV rays can cause damage to the treated area.
