Dermaplaning, also called skin resurfacing, means removing the top layers of your skin. Since many of our most visible problems appear in these top layers, removing them can lessen the surface appearance of these issues.
Removing the outermost layers of skin eliminates dead cells and debris that can make your skin look dull and tired. It also removes fine facial hair.
A small, very sharp, sterile blade slides across your skin at an angle, scraping away the upper layers of dead skin cells. This skin resurfacing takes away the outer layers of skin that have lost their healthy glow, allowing the brighter, clearer skin underneath to show through.
Because the body’s outer layers of skin consist only of dead cells waiting to be shed, removing them causes no damage to your living skin cells. However, these dead cells play a role in protecting your skin from UV damage, so after derma planing, you will need to be vigilant about wearing sunscreen.
Most people can benefit from dermaplaning. If you have an active acne breakout, sunburn, or rash, you are advised to wait until your skin has calmed down.
The blade slides across your skin, much like shaving. Instead of shaving hair, the process provides skin resurfacing by removing the dull outer layers of cells.
You should feel no discomfort during the procedure. Some people report a tingling sensation. After the resurfacing, soothing cream or gel can be applied to your skin to calm any minor irritation.
The length of the treatment will depend on the size of the area being treated. It will usually last about 30 minutes to treat the entire face. That makes this procedure a quick and safe way to get brighter, younger-looking skin.
You will not have any downtime from your dermaplaning. However, you will need to protect your fresh skin from the sun, so wear sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure.
You can expect to see skin that looks brighter and more refreshed. Fine lines and acne scarring will be much less visible. This form of skin resurfacing also removes hair from your face, even very fine hairs that can be hard to remove at home.
After derma planing, you will see results right away. Results can last anywhere from two to four weeks. In order to maintain refreshed and glowing skin, you will need to see your skincare professional for regular treatments.
